"Leather isn't merely a "by-product" of the beef industry. In fact, most leather doesn't even come from the same type of cow used for beef.
Even if this were the case, it's important, again, to think of what we do to animals not in terms of "inflicting suffering," but their property status. If an animal is killed to create two different products, what sense does it make to say one product is a by-product while the other is the real thing? Animals are killed because their dead bodies can be sold in the form of various products."

What would happen if the nonvegan population would start to abhor meat, but continue to like leather. They would still continue to exploit cows for leather.
Exploitation is exploitation.
Who are we to say that it is "worse" for a mink to be exploited for fur compared to a cow being exploited for leather and meat. We are not the victims. We have no right to give that kind of judgment when it comes to the exploitation of other sentient beings.
----
Jonathan Hughes Roy, if you think it's useful to apply 'worse' to why/how an animal died, you're looking at things from a different perspective completely. I see *that* they died as the problem, not *how* they died. In being killed for human use, all animals are equal and equally deserving of support from Vegans.

Why do we love dogs, but kill animals for fur, leather, meat, milk, etc?
Why do we love dogs, but enslave, kill and hurt animals to become fur, leather, meat; or enslave them and use, hurt and kill them in the milk and egg industry?
If we love animals, we don't kill animals. We don't kill and eat anyone that we love. If we love animals, we must support their want to not be oppressed, including not to be killed.
I highly recommend this lecture: http://vimeo.com/17538152 and the book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle (www.worldpeacediet.org )

My reply to a person spreading hatred towards a person wearing fur:
Please stop calling people bad words and juging their moral character. A person can do bad things without being aware of the suffering and death she/he is inflicting on others. Love, compassion, education helps, harsh words alienates persons.

Campaign against fur - insults and violence is morally wrong
We
don’t have the right to make any moral judgment about people’s
character- just because someone is heavily indoctrinated by our culture,
doesn’t mean that he/she is trying to be evil or mean or to hurt
someone else.
And 99% of the world's population is hurting and killing animals daily by their non-vegan choices - including the people wearing fur. There is no distinction.
But the solution is not to insult anyone or to make moral judgments about a person’s character. The solution is a message of love, compassion and nonviolence to everyone, and to educate people out of their ignorance, which is caused by our cultural indoctrination and people's daily exclusion of animals in our meals and other choices, which they have been exposed to since their childhood.
Love and compassion atttracts people and makes people more loving and compassionate. Judging words does the opposite.
Non-vegans usually do not intend to be evil to animals, they are just heavily disconnected to the animals. By their actions they become desensitized and lose their intelligence and connection with animals. It is possible to demonstrate love and compassion towards non-vegans and at the same time not compromising veganism = love, compassion and non-violence toward all living beings. E.g. this former non-vegan who slaughtered many animals was very disconnected: http://www.farmkind.org/
I write more about it here: http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/04/veganism-love-compassion-and-non.html
I challenge you all to read the fantastic book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle, available here: www.worldpeacediet.org

Using - including to kill, buy and eat - all animal products [not only fur] is unethical
Then if we are going to be consistent we must boycott each artist that isn't vegan, since they also cause the animals to suffer and get killed buy their eating- and clothes-habits.
I think we should share with the artists why it is unethical to use - including kill, buy and eat - all animal products; and that this is the only efficient way to convince them and awaken their consciousness. Otherwise if they don't understand this, the only difference made is that the animal exploitation will take other forms: http://woodstocksanctuary.org/learn/why-its-unethical-to-eat-animals/
