Jarryd Tschoerner,
You wrote: ”If we honor the sacrifice the animal has given us, it is acceptable .. The problem is that humans eat animals out of greed instead of need. But if you and your mother need the food, I think you can keep them and eat with a clean conscience.”
We don’t enslave, trap, hunt, hurt, kill and eat animals out of need. Everyone has the possibility to eat a plant-based diet without taking the life of any conscious individual. Humans do eat meat and other animal produce for “pleasure”, taste, habit, convenience and/or tradition. We have no nutritional need for animal products, and they hurt our health, see e.g. : www.adelicatebalance.com.au and the China Study ( http://www.thechinastudy.com/ ). This article shows very welll how we all now that it is morally wrong to inflict unnecessary suffering upon animals: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/a-note-about-michael-vick/
I don’t mean what it means to “honor the sacrifice”. Because the animals certainly did not want to be killed, they all value their own lives as we value our lives much as we do; and they all value their friend- and family relationships. Killing animal is stealing the purpose of an individual that is consciousness just like we are. Killing and eating a human does in no way honor that person, and in no way would that individual agree with us consuming him/her. The same is true for lobsters. Our culture has reduced animal to commodities, and we have been victims to cultural indoctrination since we were born, and learnt to exclude animals from our circle of love and compassion at our meals. However, this doesn’t change the reality of who the lobster is, consciousness just like us, and just like the dogs, cats, cows, sheep and all the other animals. So we can’t eat anyone with a clear consciousness; in order to eat an individual we need to repress parts of our love, and empathy, we need to ignore another beings feelings, thoughts, dreams and hopes; we need to steal an individual’s purpose – an individual which had a purpose, which wasn’t to become “dinner”. I highly recommend the World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle (www.worldpeacediet.org) and this lecture of his: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvZpF1R6GUo

Humans create myths in order to justify our abuse and killing of animals for foods
Speeking of Ancient Greece:
Pytaghoras of Ancient Greece said:
“As long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”
"I won't allow any kind of fallacy when discussing subjects being serious."
Why do you think that the research that I refererred to is erroneous. Have you studied it?

"Pytaghoras
was not the only Greek out there you know? There is a lot more Greek
Thinkers and Philosophers out there."
I know Ancient Greece was also heavily influenced by the domestication-slavery-culture. So you will probably quite easily find thinkers from that time, or from any time of our 8000-10000 years old domestication-culture (where there are written records), which both praises eating animal products, justifies it and even do erroneous "scientific studies" which claim to "prove" that animal products are good for you.
"Joseph Campbell, when asked the reason for myths by Bill Moyer, said
that the main reason for myths and stories is to somehow reconcile our
abuse and killing of animals for food. We create enormous rituals with
religious significance because I think we feel guilty about confining
animals. The worst thing you can do to a being is put them in prison;
putting someone in jail is a punishment. These cows are owned. Their
sovereignty is stolen from them by human beings so they can have their
milk. They are not allowed to live their lives freely in nature and we
would all like to be able to live our lives freely. I think there is no
need, personally, for ghee to be healthy. Certainly there are many
cultures that survive without having ghee. In the fullness of time,
hopefully this will be seen to be something we can let go of. I would
like to see cows returning to sovereignty again, how they lived for
millions of years."

No joy and love of eating animal products, fear, suffering and enslavement
There can be no true joy and love when eating a meal, which resulted in fear, suffering, enslavement and death for precious and conscious beings.
"Eating is an act of connecting. Even if we eat alone, we are not alone. The food we are eating connects us with the rhythms, forces, and abundance of nature and of our universe, and with the presence of those who nurtured and gathered the foods we are eating. Fields, forests, oceans, rivers, wildlife, farmers, and grocers are all with us and become part of us as we chew and digest the food.
People we think of while we are chewing and digesting our food become a part of us also. Crossculturally, meals are events of social bonding and communion. When we eat together as a family or a community, and especially if we do it in an attitude of appreciation of the food and the opportunity of being together, we strengthen the bonds of understanding and love between us.
If we consume animal foods, all of these elements of energy and consciousness are diminished by the violence and fear inherent in the vibration of the foods we are eating. Thich Nhat Hanh says it plainly:
'When we eat an egg or a chicken, we know that the egg or chicken can also contain a lot of anger. We are eating anger, and therefore we express anger. . . . So be aware. Be careful what you eat. If you eat anger, you will become and express anger. If you eat despair, you will express despair. If you eat frustration, you will express frustration.'
Since there is such an obvious and overwhelmingly strong vibration of violence, fear, and despair in animal foods, when we prepare the food we are not likely to do so mindfully, but mechanically and quickly, in order to avoid awakening our natural sensitivity. We tend to eat these foods in a disconnected way as well. To maintain our pretense that we are oblivious to the obvious horror on our plates, we eat quickly and keep ourselves busy and distracted. Fast food and the industrialization
of eating are understandable outcomes of eating animal foods over an extended period. The aggressive busyness of our culture and our
outward-looking expansionist orientation are rooted historically and currently in our discomfort with how we treat the animals we eat and
the hardness we cultivate toward their suffering."

How to transition to veganism if you have children who likes milk and meat
Yes, indeed, dairy is very bad for human health. This is true for all animal products: http://www.forksoverknives.com/
Children
wouldn’t want to eat milk products or any other animal products, if
they knew how much slavery, suffering and death it caused to animals.
See e.g. these movies: http://www.vegankit.com/why
Children
much more easily understand the importance of living a vegan lifestyle.
When we grow up, we continue to lose parts of our innate love and
empathy, by sacrificing it at our meals and what is required in order to
make these meals.
We
need to extend our love and compassion to everyone. Everyone wants to
live. If we hurt another being, we hurt ourselves. In order to kill
someone, we have to violate this individual's love and wants, we have to
crush hopes, destroy a family and friend relationships; We have to
sacrifice part of our inner love and compassion; we have to say to
ourselves that 'I don't care' in order to take someone's purpose and
life. And this has destroyed us, destroyed our society. The reason why
people inflict violence and suffering upon others is the lack of empathy
and love to others. If we instead would reinforce love and empathy at
each meal by living a vegan lifestyle, instead of destroying parts of
our love and empathy at each meal by hurting and killing someone for
'convenience' or taste, we would surely attain world peace. As long as
we sow violence and wars by our eating choices, our society and culture
will be absorbed in violence and wars. How can we ever hope for peace as
long as we inflict this violence and suffering?
Domestication
of animals is a violence, it is slavery, and it also has resulted in
human slavery, oppression against women, and other forms of oppression
that is rampant in our society. Learn more in this book: http://cup.columbia.edu/book/978-0-231-15188-7/animal-oppression-and-human-violence#.UZAIageHrdk.facebook
As
for replacements: There are many, for drinking, e.g. almond milk and
rice milk. For cooking, coconut milk is very, very tasty. Dr. Neal
Barnard refers to research which says that our taste buds is renewed
within some weeks when we change diet. But even if there was no
replacements, there still would be no justification of inflicting
suffering and death to our precious sentient and feeling non-human
brothers and sisters.
Hope
this helps and motivates you to transition to the lifestyle of
non-discriminatory love, compassion and nonviolence to everyone who is
consciousness!! :)

The connection of eating meat and starvation
My answer regarding plants to a person:
First of all, I recommend this post about plants: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/a-frequently-asked-question-what-about-plants/
It shows that plants are not sentient and they don't feel pain and suffering.
If you still think that plants are consciousness, just like we are and all the other animals are, then avoid killing them. You don't need to. See the paragraph further down.
If you kill and eat cows - then you kill an innocent and conscious cow; and in total you consume more than 10 times more plants are consumed (the food of the cow) compared to the amount of plants you would have had to consume if you ate a vegan diet. This is also why we will eliminate starvation and poverty if everyone eats a vegan diet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fws0f9s4Bas
To quote Philip Wollen: "Poor countries sell their grain to the West while their own children starve in their arms. And we feed it to livestock. So we can eat a steak? Am I the only one who sees this as a crime? Every morsel of meat we eat is slapping the tear-stained face of a starving child. When I look into her eyes, should I be silent?
The earth can produce enough for everyone’s need. But not enough for everyone’s greed."
Second of all, if you think that plants are sentient beings, think about the following [a quote from another person]:
First off you don't kill plants. (..) If you eat an apple does the apple tree die?
You throw the apple seeds into the ground another apple tree may sprout. Where is the killing?
Do you know that if you planted a carrot top into the soil it will start growing again. Although you won't get a full grown carrot but it does grow.
The only plants you actually "kill" are then ones you need to uproot the roots for.
Take a look at a grain or legume field a soy, rice or wheat field. They are brown when its ready to harvest.
Thats because the plant is dead. I was a part of a seed conservation project.
You cannot conserve seeds from a live plant. Lets take soy. If you plucked the edmame the green raw soy it will rot in some time. Very rarely does it become hard. You have to wait for the plant to die. During this process the seed/legume produces enough phytic acid to protect it and becomes dry natural. Such seeds/legumes stay for years without getting spoiled.
Then plants and humans/animal have a symbiotic relationship. Plants can't move. They need external
help. that is why they produce nectar so they can attract the bees and butterflies that help them cross pollinate the flowers so they can reproduce.
Seeds that fall to the ground from overripe fruits or other plants do not grow into a tree. Because the "parent" plant shade and roots does not allow it to grow.
A human or an animal has to eat that fruit and disperse it far enough so it can grow.
This is how all natural fruit groves have come into existence.
A study found that 80% of all trees were planted by squirrels. They store nuts for winter and then they forget where they have stored it, when monsoon comes these nuts grow into trees.
So that you are killing any plants is just a myth .
If you are concerned about carrots then you can follow Jain Philosophy, Manish Jain Can, help you more with this.
Donald Watson was inspired by Jain philosophy of Ahimsa and Veganism is based on it.
They don't eat carrots, potatoes, and other roots vegetables Manish can help you with what to avoid and what are the alternatives.

Animals are conscious individuals, animals are persons
Bob,
You don't have any satisfactory answer to the clear fact that causing animals suffering and death for food, clearly is inflicting on them unnecessary suffering?
Animals are conscious individuals:
Interesting article:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323869604578370574285382756.html
One quote: "The one historical constant in my field is that each time a claim of human uniqueness bites the dust, other claims quickly take its place. Meanwhile, science keeps chipping away at the wall that separates us from the other animals. We have moved from viewing animals as instinct-driven stimulus-response machines to seeing them as sophisticated decision makers. "
--
"An international group of prominent scientists has signed The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness in which they are proclaiming their support for the idea that animals are conscious and aware to the degree that humans are — a list of animals that includes all mammals, birds, and even the octopus.
There is plenty of evidence that animals are feeling suffering."

As we sow shall we reap. Our culture's lack of love due to our harm inflicted on animals
Please.. Consider this:
Cats, dogs, cows, insects, humans. Our society wants to make a difference and then justify our use, abuse and killing for taste, pleasure or convenience, based on this difference.
However, we are all one, we are all consciousness, we all love, we all feel, we are. If we sow suffering, we reap suffering. We all have a purpose, to serve, to be a light, not to hurt or use (all animal products and the treatment of animals as commodities are hurting animals). I highly recommend World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle, www.worldpeacediet.org

We should stop hurting our family. We should treat everyone with love, compassion and nonviolence, i.e. go vegan . More information at www.vegankit.com

We are all consciousness. How can we talk all day about love to our human sisters and brothers, but talk about our fellow pigs as some resource that can be killed for something trivial as a taste experience.
If you ever got into a loving relationship with pigs , cows and other farmed animals, you would understand how wrong it is. We wouldn't kill a companion dog, so why do we kill a pig, who is consciousness just like us, and who is our companion on this body. They are also consciousness, just another body than what us humans have.
Love and peace
