Human rights and animal rights, against violence and discrimination

This article will illustrate some ways that I help human rights.

I steadily encounter human right organizations that want to help humans by efforts that are harming and killing animals, in order to provide e.g. food and clothing.

How do they think that we can get a more peaceful and just world by inflicting completely unnecessary suffering, violence and death to sentient beings with an interest of not suffering and an interest of a continued existence? It is unnecessary, since they can provide nutritious foods for an optimal health from non-animal sources [1], and they can provide clothes created from non-animal sources.

Violence anywhere, hurts everyone, everywhere. A violent means, apart from being immoral, doesn’t work to reach a nonviolent ends.
As long as there as people think that violence can be justified for completely frivolous reasons, such as the violence in the production of animal foods, people will think that other forms of violence also are justified, that are much less frivolous.

A human rights-organization sees a need, e.g. a freezing child that is starving. They feed her/him animal foods and put on clothes from sheep wool. In this process animals are harmed, killed and exploited for completely frivolous reasons, frivolous since the starving and freezing child could have been fed by foods from non-animal sources, and clothed from non-animal sources. In the process of helping the kid, animals are exploited, people are taught to believe that violence is justified for frivolous reasons and that it can be used to help people; poverty and starvation is exacerbated because of all plants, water and energy required to feed the animal who is killed for frivolous reasons. People start wars, and use violence, for what they believe are justified reasons; because they have been taught that violence is a justified means (reinforced by having violence on their plates 3 times per day (violence that was used to produce animal foods), and using violence as their clothes everyday (violence that was used to kill and domesticate the animals used for fur, leather, down, etc.)) to reach a peaceful ends; and in this process poverty and starvation is exacerbated, which again human rights activists try to alleviate through being violent towards animals.  And thus this is all a vicious circle.

As long as human rights activists exploit nonhuman animals to reach their goals, we won’t have any end of all violence and injustice inflicted towards humans. And the same goes the other way around. As long as “animal rights” activists justify violence and harm against humans, including sexism, to promote animal rights, the exploitation of nonhuman animals will continue. It is all a vicious circle that only can be broken by opposing all violence and discrimination towards both human and nonhuman animals.

Here is one example of how feeding starving People animal foods exacerbate starvation, injustices and poverty:
“Currently, the continent as a whole has the arable land capacity to feed its entire population with plant protein, but it does not
have even close to the land capacity to feed all of its farm animals. The European Union found that only 20 percent of what Europe’s farm animals eat comes from the continent, while the remainder must be imported. Because most of these imports use up the land in developing countries, this animal-based method of feeding Europe contributes directly to the depletion of the resources of developing nations, thus contributing to their continued impoverishment. What it essentially boils down” (..)

“even if you are only concerned about human rights issues, you ought to be concerned about animal exploitation as well because it is directly connected to a significant human rights issue. As we discussed earlier, the amount of resources required to produce animal foods is multiples of what is required to produce plant foods. Although there are certainly political issues that hamper the distribution of food, it is also the case that animal agriculture and a diet of animal foods is increasingly a threat to world hunger, our water supply, our topsoil, etc.”

Veganism is not elitism, discrimination against species is elitism

Kristen S Aldrich ,
“My family is differently dieted from me and we make compromises, why am I automatically un-compassionate and violent.””
It is not about you and your intentions; it is about the choices you make. I certainly believe you are very goodhearted. However, goodhearted people, just like I believe non-vegan people are in general, do make violent choices that certainly doesn’t demonstrate love and compassion toward our nonhuman fellow sentient earthlings. I did it myself. I became a vegan last autumn after almost 28 years of thinking that it was right to hurt and kill animals for trivial and unnecessary reasons such as food (when we know everyone can survive and thrive on a vegan diet, see below). How can you love and demonstrate compassion toward an individual that you enslave, hurt and kill for food. They value their lives as much as we value our lives. Why can’t we respect their fundamental and basic right to live?

Btw, all animal products, not only meat, is causing the enslavement, exploitation and killing of nonhuman animals. E.g. milk cows are heavily exploited and usually get killed when they are 5 years old in the milk industry, after a live of misery, and getting their calves stolen after each pregnancy, in order so that man can take the milk of the cows. Learn more here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rg3Yfdbs24I&feature=player_embedded

Humans evolved eating a starch-based diet (many ate some animal products) (see: http://www.drmcdougall.com/video/starch_solution.html ), however this isn’t relevant for the morality. We have the choice and opportunity to eat a vegan diet, and choosing not to do so, is inflicting unnecessary suffering and death upon our fellow sentient earthlings.
All people can get all nutrition they need on a vegan diet: http://www.drmcdougall.com/
“I can't force them to change their entire lifestyle for my morals.”
Hurting and killing other sentient beings for animal products isn’t any subjective moral-issue, it is about our obligations in our treatment of non-human animals. You probably agree with me that animal abuse is morally wrong, and to follow what you believe in morally, necessitates going vegan: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/a-note-about-michael-vick/#.UajvlJxc18E
It is not elitism, just like be against racisism, hetrosexim, sexism and any other discrimination, isn’t elitism. All opposition against discrimination is certainly without compromise.

“Also I was raised by hunters, animals dying doesn't really bother me.” This is just because you are disconnected to who the animals, what they feel and their inherent moral rights. This is the case for every exploitation and discrimination, that the person inflicting harm upon another being is disconnected to the victim, and doesn’t understand the suffering and violence he/she is inflicting and how it effect the victim.

Write this in all well-meaning. Only veganism will make us and all the animals truly free, a non-discriminatory, nonviolent and compassionate lifestyle to all living beings is the only way for peace. As long as we sow suffering and violence towards our fellow earthlings, our culture will be inflicted by violence.

All discrimination is morally wrong - discrimination against women, against homosexuals, against animals, etc.

What is important in this world is: “all breathing, existing, living, sentient creatures should not be slain, nor treated with violence, nor abused, nor tormented, nor driven away.”

A person's sexual orientation isn't related to ethics and writing negatively about homosexuality has caused lots of suffering and violence and lots of discrimination and still do.

"Speciesism is wrong because it’s like racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc., which also involve focusing on an irrelevant criterion (race or sex or sexual orientation or whatever) to justify not according equal consideration."

I recommend this article: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/is-hetereosexism-different/#.UaYwUZxc18E
Please read it and share your thoughts.

------

Speciesism is morally objectionable *because* it's like racism, sexism, heterosexism, and other forms of discrimination in that all discrimination involves devaluing the interests of others for morally irrelevant reasons--be the particular reason race, sex, sexual orientation/preference, or species. So to say that you regard using species to devalue the interests of sentient beings as bad but you have no view about the use of race, sex, or sexual orientation/preference to devalue the interests of others makes no sense. In order for your objection to speciesism to be coherent, you must oppose the use of all morally irrelevant criteria to devalue the interests of others.

Domestication, slavery, violence of humans and other animals is morally wrong. Go vegan!

What do you call a human with no legs?
A human
What do you call a cow with no legs?
A cow.

Any other answer actually shows that we are discriminating an individual based on a completely irrelevant criteria - species. It is as wrong do discriminate a person based on sex, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other criteria. All sentients beings have both a moral value and the right not to be enslaved, used, hurted and killed. We are all one, we are all consciousness, we all love, we all feel, we are. If we sow suffering, we reap suffering. We all have a purpose, to serve, to be a light, not to hurt or use (all animal products and the treatment of animals as commodities are hurting animals).

We need to extend our love and compassion to everyone. Everyone wants to live. If we hurt another being, we hurt ourselves. In order to kill someone, we have to violate this individual's love and wants, we have to crush hopes, destroy a family and friend relationships; We have to sacrifice part of our inner love and compassion; we have to say to ourselves that 'I don't care' in order to take someone's purpose and life. And this has destroyed us, destroyed our society. The reason why people inflict violence and suffering upon others is the lack of empathy and love to others. If we instead would reinforce love and empathy at each meal by living a vegan lifestyle, instead of destroying parts of our love and empathy at each meal by hurting and killing someone for 'convenience' or taste, we would surely attain world peace. As long as we sow violence and wars by our eating choices, our society and culture will be absorbed in violence and wars.

Domestication of animals is a violence, it is slavery, and it also has resulted in human slavery, oppression against women, and other forms of oppression that is rampant in our society. Vegan - since discriminating, abusing and killing animals is morally wrong

I noticed that my reply about karma was posted in the wrong thread:

Here is an edited version of what I wrote:
There is a truth. Hatred, injustices, wars, violence, discrimination is morally wrong. Discrimination, such as racism, hetrosexism, sexim, ageism, speciecism, and any other kind of discrimination is morally wrong.

We can never justify injustices and other violence by claiming some distorted concept of 'karma'. I don't believe 'as we sow, so shall we reap' means that all injustices and violence that occurs to a person is caused by a person's previous actions. I believe in karma, but not karma nof any other concept, can ever justify inflicting violence, injustices, suffering and death upon any being.
Discrimination and using violence against another individual based on the criteria of species is morally wrong. More information about it here: http://www.nonhumanslavery.com/gary-francione-on-speciesism-and-slavery

In any case, we are morally responsible to stand up and fight against all violence.
As I wrote earlier: Standing for Ahimsa (non-violence and compassion to all living beings) requires us standing up against injustices and violence against other sentient beings, regardless if they happen to be humans, fish, cats, dogs or of any other species. Standing silent only perpetuates the status quo of injustices, violence and slavery perpetuated on a massive scale against innocent sentient beings; and makes the bystander guilty for not standing up and defending the defenseless and oppressed.
Only a spiritual awakening to the so simple fact that all beings are consciousness (fish, dogs, cats, humans and all other beings) and that all equally has the same right to live as humans, and that all should be treated with love, compassion and nonviolence, will transform our violent culture that is so filled of injustices, oppression, slavery and suffering.

Racism, hetrosexism, sexim, ageism, speciecism, and all other discrimination is morally wrong

There is a truth. Hatred, injustices, wars, violence, discrimination is morally wrong. Discrimination, such as racism, hetrosexism, sexim, ageism, speciecism, and any other kind of discrimination is morally wrong.

Discrimination and using violence against another individual based on the criteria of species is morally wrong: “Speciesism and human slavery are similar in that in all cases animals and enslaved humans have a basic interest in not being treated as things and yet are treated as things on the basis of morally irrelevant criteria. To deny animals this basic right simply because they are animals is like saying that we should not abolish race-based slavery because of the perceived inferiority of the slaves’ race. The argument used to support slavery and the argument used to support animal exploitation are structurally similar: we exclude beings with interests from the moral community because there is some supposed difference between ‘them’ and ‘us’ that has nothing to do with the inclusion of these beings in the moral community. The animals rights position maintains that if we believe that animals have moral significance, the principle of equal consideration requires that we stop treating them as things.” – Gary Francione [Quote: http://www.facebook.com/abolitionistapproach ]

We have no justification to enslave, use, domesticate, hurt and kill animals. Going vegan (including stop killing and eating animals and animal products) is the only rational response, and the only love based on love and empathy which recognizes the inherent moral value of animals. Karma, discrimination, violence against humans and animals

06.07.2013:
That’s why I think it is importance that we e.g. use our Facebook-page to spread vegan messages, and also posts that oppose to other violence and discrimination as well. It our responsibility to inform our friends and acquaintances, and every conversation is an opportunity that we should take. We are complicit if we remain silent about the violence and discrimination in this world. Only education will change this world, and make the world less and less violent.

Different color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or species is irrelevant for equality, peace and rights

Equality, peace and rights are so important.  Different color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other criteria, are all irrelevant for us granting everyone equality, peace, nonviolence and rights. Not only among humans, but among all species. In fact the unequality, violence and suffering that we inflict upon other species, and the justification of this unequality and violence based on this artificial and irrelevant criteria, is the root of the violence, suffering, and unequality in our culture. As we sow, we will reap.
"Fourth, as I argued in my chapter in The Great Ape Project and as I have said repeatedly since then, the right to full membership in the moral community and the right not to be treated as property is dependent on only one characteristic—sentience. If a nonhuman is sentient, then we have a moral obligation not to treat that being as a resource or commodity. The fact that a dog may not have the same sort of reflective self-awareness that a chimpanzee has does not mean that the dog and the chimpanzee are not equal for the purpose of not having their fundamental interests in life and in not suffering disregarded if it benefits someone else to do so.

Animals are killed everyday at zoos (and many, many other places) for a variety of reasons. The shooting of poor Johnny was surely tragic, but equally so are those deaths of nonhumans who are not “similar” to us in the way that Johnny was, beyond being creatures who had subjective awareness and who valued their lives in their own ways.
Go vegan, never patronize zoos, and resist the creation of new hierarchies based on anthropocentric values.
Humans are not the measure of things; we are only one measure among many.
