PETA has a campaign against seal slaughter.
My comments:
Everyone on this thread agrees with that it is wrong to inflict unnecessary harm on animals.
We
have no nutritional need for animal foods. The production of meat,
milk, dairy products, honey, leather, eggs all involves exploitation.
The animals used for eggs and dairy products are killed when their
production declines. Cows, chickens and other animals regularly get
their families destroyed. Cow mothers get their babies ripped away from
them within the first week of them being born. I went vegan when I
realized all of this, since I didn’t want to be a part of paying for
animal exploitation.
There
is no moral difference between the seal slaughter on the picture,
compared to the breeding and slaughter of cows, chickens and other
animals used for meat, dairy products, eggs, etc. If animals matter
morally, we can't justify any kind of exploitation of them to satisfy
our palate pleasure, convenience, etcetera.

Dairy cows get impregnated without their consent
We should be gagging on our organic Greek yogurt. Consider this image of a man with an arm shoved up a dairy cow’s rectum with a probe on the end, looking at a computer monitor to determine when it is best to impregnate her, while her head is locked in a restraint. Our deplorable behavior toward other animals would be considered rape, if the subject were another human being (the law defines rape as penetration without consent and animals of course cannot give their consent). But because she is “just an animal,” we claim our rape is suddenly justifiable? And when rape is performed for economic reasons, it’s suddenly acceptable? And because we use technology and gadgetry to control female reproduction, it’s suddenly an advance instead of an offense? This is cruelty, arrogance, hypocrisy, prejudice and faulty logic.
Learn all about how dairy cows are forcibly impregnated, what animal agriculture euphemistically calls “artificial insemination,” at http://freefromharm.org/animal-cruelty-investigation/the-sexual-violation-of-dairy-cows-14-step-process-of-artificial-insemination/

Dairy industry in Australia, bobby calves, etc, Solution: veganism
Dairy industry in Australia:
Many of us don't give a second thought to where the milk in our latte or the cheese in our sandwich comes from.
But as the saying goes, there's a little bit of meat in every drop of milk. Behind the dairy industry lies a brutal secret: the 700,000 or so "bobby calves" slaughtered each year in this country at as young as five days of age.
Dairy cows are impregnated yearly in order to produce milk for human consumption. But their male calves are "surplus to needs".
Most will be destined for the slaughterhouse within days of birth. Bobby calf meat is considered to be of low value and is predominantly exported as ground beef and offal to Japan and the US.
Others will be killed several months later, after they have been fattened up for veal.
Female calves are retained to follow in the footsteps of their mothers or, if not viable as dairy cows, will also be swiftly consigned to the abattoir.
Bobby calves endure long stretches of transport to regional abattoirs. This is a major stressor for any food animal, and even more so for calves, who are physiologically immature, with limited fat reserves, poorly developed ability to maintain body temperature and a lack of responsiveness to external stimuli.
Trucks can be overloaded, without bedding or room to lie down.
Calves are lifted and dragged by their tails or legs, or in some instances electrically prodded to get them moving. Many remain overnight, without sustenance, in the abattoir before they are slaughtered.
It is well established that cows, like humans, are sentient beings. They feel pain, distress, fear, vulnerability, loneliness, grief, hunger and thirst.
Mother cows form a strong maternal bond with their babies from as little as five minutes of contact after birth. Early separation of mother cows from their young causes stress, which is often manifested by distressed calling. Calves are traumatised after being taken from their mothers shortly after birth.
It is a forlorn picture. These newborn animals are utterly defenceless, and totally beholden to us. To serve our desire for cow's milk we bring them into being, with all their capacity to feel and their complex subjectivity, and then kill them pitilessly, as if they were the insensible by-product of an industrial machine.
The bobby calf trade exemplifies all that is ethically perverse in animal agribusiness.
Now, to make matters worse, the Australian government is proposing an amendment to livestock standards that will legalise the starvation of bobby calves for 30 hours before their slaughter.
Currently the unenforceable Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals: Land Transport of Cattle provides that calves should be fed within six hours of transportation and must not be left without appropriate liquid food for more than 10 hours.
The arguments being used to support the amendment are just as wrong-headed as the trade itself.
In the end, they boil down to reducing costs for the industry, and, as is so often the case, the government is onside with agribusiness.

They advocate regulating the industry. I advocate abolishing the industry totally. There is a Complete difference between these approaches.
There is no "humane" breeding and murder of cows. You can't kill a sentient being "humanely", since the sentient being doesn't want to be killed by humans. I believe in this approach to Animal rights: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/
Note, the solution is not regulating the animal exploitation-industry, the solution is to totally abolish it. There are no "humane" transports to slaughter, there are no "humane" slaughter houses, there are no "humane" confinement of cows, and no "humane" separation and destroying of families.
---------
Separation of mother cows with their calves:
Quote from the Australian dairy industry's website:
Calf welfare is improved by removing it from the cow within 12 hours of birth and applying the 3-step calf rearing plan to reduce the risk of infection
“Research suggests that separating cow and calf as early as possible reduces the stress on both as there will be minimal bonding between them.
It is also easier to teach the calf to drink milk from a bucket or artificial teat. This ensures it receives enough high quality milk (including colostrum) to keep it healthy.
Calves should be removed from the cow within 12 hours of birth to:
• reduce the risk of getting diseases from adult cattle, and
• lower the stress for the cow and calf “
Quote: http://www.dairyaustralia.com.au/Animals-feed-and-environment/Animal-welfare/Calf-welfare/Managing-calf-welfare.aspx

That is totally bias that any sentient being would benefit of becoming forcefully separated to her mother.
They are only separating the cows and their calves to increase the profit.
-------------
Slaughterhouses:
There is a reason why they don't want anyone to film inside of the building, and don't allow this to take place.
Slaughterhouses are cruel per definition. It is always a cruel action to take the life of a healthy sentient being, who doesn't want to be killed by us.

Dog meat festival in China or grill fest of cows in USA -- same moral atrocity of killing animals
Why would a Chinese mayor listen to a campaign which is signed by many non-vegans who don't consume dogs, but consume other animals that matters as much morally? I think it would be much more effective to show him why the usage and consumption of any animal products is morally wrong. And the mayor is as responsible as the rest of every and any non-vegan for this festival taking place. Everyone eating and using animals and their products is directly paying for the animal exploitation and that all animals of this world should be regarded as property, a status which never will protect them from animal abuse and murder.
I think such petitions are problematic, since they send are either sending the implicit message/often interpreted to mean by the readers that there is a difference between animal cruelty of different countries, and difference between animal cruelty of different species, and also only condemning one sort of animal cruelty against this species. I think those petitions confuse many non-vegans, making them think they are helping animals without challenging their speciecism and their non-vegan habits of animal cruelty against other species for food. Here are some more problems:
http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/03/single-issue-campaigns-such-as-anti-fur.html
I think we should focus our time on this kind of education: http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/06/varfor-fordomer-vi-djurplageri-men.html [in English, see instead: http://articles.philly.com/2009-08-14/news/24986151_1_atlanta-falcons-quarterback-vick-illegal-dog-dog-fights ] - i.e. showing non-vegans that all animal exploitation is inherently wrong and showing that they already agree with the basic premise, which will they cause them to go vegan if they just follow what they believe.
What do you think?

Cows don't get to celebrate Mother's day, due to our enslavement and stealing of their babies
Hello, Hope you had a great Mother’s day at your house! :)
Just wanted share some information, that I hope you will find helpful! What Trader Joe’s don’t tell you (and what I wasn’t aware of until last autumn) is that buying and eating milk chocolate and other milk products, is resulting in inflicting unnecessary suffering and death to sentient cows, who all love and value their own lives, and their families and friends, as much as we value or own life, families and friends. They are enslaved, they are impregnated each year and their babies are stolen from them within a few days, their male calves are killed within 18 months and sold as meat, they are killed at about an age of 5 years when the industry doesn’t regard them as profitable anymore, they are milked without their approval, the calves don’t get the cow milk they need, they are enslaved by mans domestication, despite that they want to live in freedom. The cows and their calves never get the opportunity to celebrate Mother’s day because of our culture’s exploitation and enslavement.
We all believe that it is morally wrong to inflict unnecessary suffering and death upon animals is morally wrong, and consuming animal products is surely causing this: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/what-michael-vick-taught-us/ And we have no nutritional need for animal products, it is detrimental to our health and is causing diseases: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ I became vegan (i.e. stopped using and consuming animal and their products) when I realized all this.
I highly recommend this lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvZpF1R6GUo

Milk industry hurts and kills animals, and is taking calves away from their mothers
Did you know this about milk products:
They are bad for our health, just like all animal products: see: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ . Drinking milk and eating milk products hurts and kills other conscious beings who love and value their life as much as we value our life.
The milk industry and all other animal industry is causing so much suffering and death to these wonderful cows: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcQ6yBEE5N0&feature=player_embedded
Families are divided, 5-year old milk cows and male calves are killed, mother cows and their babies are separted for always after some hours, or at most after some days, it destroys families and peer relations. Learn more about what they go through here: http://www.vegankit.com/why

Cows love life and their family, they have emotions, they want to live
If
ones choices hurts animals, one become more and more disconnected to
who they really are and their purpose of life. One truly loses ones
ability to understand and communicate with animals.
If one truly loves a being, one doesn't take their precious life from them.
Cows love their life, they love their family, and show alot of affection to their family. Just like us they have a heart and care for their loved ones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vcQ6yBEE5N0
This former farmer was disconnected and thought that it was okay to kill animals. He changed his life. Read his story here: http://www.farmkind.org/AR.htm

The former rancher who killed cows, but later regained his empathy and became a vegan
The
reason why people argue that it is right to eat animal products, is
because of the indoctrination of our culture since childhood. I did the
same until the last autumn when I became a vegan.
The followins is a very touching story. A rancher that from the beginning in his childhood connected with cows and other animals that people slaughtered; but then learned to disconnect and ignore their feelings. Later on he once again learnt to feel empathy for the cows through a meeting with a cow he adopted at Animal Sanctuary. Eventually he became a vegan.
Read about it here: www.farmkind.org
People have empathy for their dogs. A Cow is no different in feeling suffering, fear, joy and bond to his/her family. Neither of them should be on our plants!!!! We should treat others as we want to be treated ourselves
All animals are conscious and they do value life as much as we do.
The following applies to all animals: humans, dogs, cats, cows, etc.:
If we don't want to be killed, we shouldn't kill other being.
If we don't want someone else to steal our family, we shouldn't steal their family.
If we want to find our purpose in this world, we shouldn't steal others purpose.
If we don't want to be exploited and abused, we shouldn't abuse anyone else.
If we don't want to become enslaved, we shouldn't keep anyone else as a slave.
If we don't want to hurt any animals, we must become vegans (i.e. stop eating, wearing and using animal products, and in other ways do actions that are hurting and killing animals).
If we love animals, we don't kill animals. We don't kill and eat anyone that we love. If we love animals, we must support their want to not be oppressed, including not to be killed.
And this is a wonderful lecture by Will Tuttle who also grew up as a non-vegan, disconnected to the animals, but later in his life made the connection: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLgGnP0pWzM

“Ahimsa milk” is for violence towards animals. They are compromising animal rights and splitting families
“Ahimsa milk” is making cows pregnant against their will
each year, and they let the cows live a life that is not the life of freedom that
all animals deserve to live. They are completely distorting the beautiful
concept of Ahimsa – non-violence and compassion to all living beings. It is not
Ahimsa to use animals. The cow milk belongs to their calves. Calves needs their
calcium and should not be drained of her calcium by humans. The calves needs
and have the right to their mother – whom “Ahimsa milk” is talking from them
when they are small babies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcQ6yBEE5N0&feature=player_embedded
The milk industry and other usage of animals (also breeding
of dogs and other animals) are splitting families. Read more in this article
about the slavery that the animals get to live in because of that our society
looks upon them and treats them as “property” and sees it as a morally right
thing to do to steal their milk and using other animals in any other way. It is
compromising animal rights, health and well-being, including what they do both
on “no-kill” diary farms and other diary farms, that are the root to all animal abuse in the
world:
Milk is causing humans a vast amount of health problems,
including osteoporosis, diabetes and cancer:
Furthermore, the milk industry and other animal industry,
has a vast environmental impact and is causing poverty, starvation, a vast
amount of greenhouse-gases and subsequent deaths by droughts and floods because
of climate change: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fws0f9s4Bas&feature=em-uploademail
Please all persons reading this, be vegan. It is a very easy
decision (see www.vegankit.com ) to not live a life that is oppressing other sentient and
feeling beings. I became this autumn and I am doing much better both
physically, emotionally and spiritually – not to be a part of oppressing other
sentient beings. It is a very easy choice to stop being a part of the suffering
and death that our fellow precious animals are going through.
From their website: "New born calves are kept with their mothers for the first four to five days."
"Cows will give birth to calves once every two years, a maximum of 5 calves in a lifetime. This will take place both naturally through the use of a bull or sometimes by artificial insemination."
They are disregarding the rights of animals.
Animals have the right to their body and not to be milked against their will and not to be made pregnant against their will - just like a human mother. The right not to be drained of calcium.
They have the right to live with their mother ALL life, not only for four to five days.
All milk companies are disregarding the rights of cows.
If we love cows, we can't compromise their rights.
---
We better work for a vegan world, so that all animals can be free and be together with their families.
We shouldn't support businesses that compromise animal rights. It doesn't help the animals. It supports and promotes animal exploitation. What helps the animals is decreasing the demand of animal products by going vegan and inspiring others to do the same. This will reduce the number of animals being killed and hurt, and animals being used in other ways.
As long as people want to drink the cows milk, and people want to make a profit on exploiting the animals, they have to take the calves away from their mother. Otherwise the calves would drink the milk. The people are drinking the milk that belongs to the calves. It is not made for humans to drink or to use it to make cheese, it is made for the calves.
Have you seen this lecture?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fws0f9s4Bas&feature=em-uploademail

Veganism is --eating with love and compassion and disregarding any "taste buds" that promote violence, suffering and death to animals
If we think this is unethical:
However e.g. to mention that there are 600 million vegetarian persons (and he includes those who are eating eggs and milk in this definition), fails to address the death and suffering eating animals products causes other sentient beings:
[For anyone that is unaware of this: ]
If we think this is unethical:
Cows to be raped (impregnated against their will) every year (because a cow produces milk for 'only' a year), heavily abused, having their milk stolen, having their calves stolen the same day or some days after they conceive them (so that humans can get their milk) EVERY year, having the cows drained of calcium that they need, having their male calves (who where stolen from them :( ]slaughtered for "meat" being 6 months or 18 months old, having the "milk cows" being killed 5 years old because that they can't produce enough milk.
then we must stop causing this to occur by our dietary choices.
Animals life, purpose and health MUST be more important than our taste buds.
We can't just ignore this. Their life matters as much to them, as our life matters to us. They want to live as much as we want to live. They don't want to be abused as we don't want to be abused.
This is a wonderful movie with cows (non gory): http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vcQ6yBEE5N0
Animals have the right to be free and not to be enslaved. I really recommend this article: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/
If you research e.g. the website www.vegankit.com you will understand that any kind of animal use is wrong, and that it perpetuates the status of animals as "property", which is the cause of the most horrendous physical animal abuses. If you understand this you can in no way participate in any kind of use of animal, since you are both confining and exploiting an animal and are perpetuating the "property"-status of animals, with all of its negative consequences.

Growing plant-based foods in ones own land is a great idea!
Regarding the cows:
How could we take something from someone else that doesn't belong to us, e.g. milk?
How could we impregnate an individual against her will (regardless of species)l?
How could we drain someone on the calcium that she needs (regardless of species)?
How could we separate a mother from her calf - which is done in all milk operations? Furthermore, no one affords to feed all the cows (one more calf per year, because of making the cow pregnant, so that humans can get more milk), so male calves are sent to slaughter (or in a non-kill operation, which is extremely rare, they are used in other ways, perpetuating the "animal as property"-notion, which is the cause of all suffering humans impose on animals in this world.
Except for all of the suffering, pain, slavery and death that is inflicted on the animals -- which is never ethical and can never be justified by any means - ALL diary operations (and operations with other animal products) (and grass-fed cows are having a bigger environmental impact because of that they release more methane gas) are having a huge environmental impact and is causing poverty, starvation and huge global warming, which will cause a vast amounts of droughts and floods with many more people and other animals killed:

The plant-based foods that the more than 56 billion land animals (who have the sadly misfortune to grow up to become someones food - and this include "milk cows") brutally slaughtered each year eats could feed more than 9 billion people.
6 million children are dieing of starvation in the world each year. Hundreds of millions don't get enough food. If we care of them we must let our eating habits reflect this. If everyone ate plant-based food, the food would suffice for everyone's need.
