Animals are conscious individuals, animals are persons

Bob,
You don't have any satisfactory answer to the clear fact that causing animals suffering and death for food, clearly is inflicting on them unnecessary suffering?
Animals are conscious individuals:

Interesting article:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323869604578370574285382756.html
One quote: "The one historical constant in my field is that each time a claim of human uniqueness bites the dust, other claims quickly take its place. Meanwhile, science keeps chipping away at the wall that separates us from the other animals. We have moved from viewing animals as instinct-driven stimulus-response machines to seeing them as sophisticated decision makers. "
--
"An international group of prominent scientists has signed The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness in which they are proclaiming their support for the idea that animals are conscious and aware to the degree that humans are — a list of animals that includes all mammals, birds, and even the octopus.
There is plenty of evidence that animals are feeling suffering."

Healthy vegans get more protein than they need

“The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that men and women obtain 5% of their calories as protein.  This would mean 38 grams of protein for a man burning 3000 calories a day and 29 grams for a woman using 2300 calories a day.  This quantity of protein is impossible to avoid when daily calorie needs are met by unrefined starches and vegetables. For example, rice alone would provide 71 grams of highly usable protein and white potatoes would provide 64 grams of protein.” John A. McDougall, MD

------------

"William Rose and his colleagues completed research by the spring of 1952 that determined the human requirements for the 8 essential amino acids.2 They set as the “minimum amino acid requirement” the largest amount required by any single subject and then they doubled these values to make the “recommended amino acid requirement,” which was also considered a “definitely safe intake.” By calculating the amount of each essential amino acid provided by unprocessed complex carbohydrates (starches and vegetables)3 and comparing these values with those determined by Rose,1 the results show that any single one or combination of these plant foods provides amino acid intakes in excess of the recommended requirements. Therefore, a careful look at the founding scientific research and some simple math prove it is impossible to design an amino acid–deficient diet based on the amounts of unprocessed starches and vegetables sufficient to meet the calorie needs of humans. Furthermore, mixing foods to make a complementary amino acid composition is unnecessary.4

The reason it is important to correct this misinformation is that many people are afraid to follow healthful, pure vegetarian diets—they worry about “incomplete proteins” from plant sources. A vegetarian diet based on any single one or combination of these unprocessed starches (eg, rice, corn, potatoes, beans), with the addition of vegetables and fruits, supplies all the protein, amino acids, essential fats, minerals, and vitamins (with the exception of vitamin B12) necessary for excellent health. To wrongly suggest that people need to eat animal protein for nutrients will encourage them to add foods that are known to contribute to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and many forms of cancer, to name just a few common problems.5"

All-vegetarian school still exploits and hurts animals by consuming other animal products

I found an article about an all-vegetarian School.
Quote from another article about the school:
"Students start out their day with bagels and cream cheese, whole-grain banana bread, egg and cheese roll-ups, to name a few of the offerings from this month."

I want to be positive and I like to encourage people when they are making choices towards veganism. However, I can't see how this is a step in the right direction. [Addition: well it may be if students choose to consume less animal products overall.] We have no data showing that this causes them to consume a lesser amount of animal products. [Add: But it seems it may be, see comment below.] I have even read of a school that does Meatless mondays, where it now is impossible to get a vegan meal at all during mondays, which was possible before they started with Meatless mondays. A vegan student was very sad about this; and of course it is a tragedy for the animals including all other people at that school also.

PETA making a public statement and celebrating this school, once again reinforces the idea that animal flesh is morally distinguishable from other animal foods.
I agree with the points made in this article: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/vegan-mondays/
I think that if we want to encourage people to transition to veganism who say they can't become vegan at once, that we shouldn't encourage them to go lacto-ovo-"vegetarian" first, but to start with some vegan meals and then increase their amount of vegan meals (after we have stated how easy it is to go vegan at once, and that it is the only morally right thing to do). More of my ideas and suggestions: http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/04/the-way-to-transition-to-veganism-is.html

Finally,I would like to share these thoughts that I found today regarding terminology usage - if it is okay to use the term "vegetarian":

"Not in my view. The problem is at two levels.

First, the word "vegetarian" is now associated as a matter of word meaning with the consumption of animal products, whether dairy, eggs, or, in some cases, fish. There are "lacto-ovo-pesco-vegetarians." So using "vegetarian" perpetuates and reinforces this usage and meaning.
Second, vegans do not consume any animal products but they also do not wear or use animal products. "Vegetarianism," however it's interpreted, deals only with food. "Vegan" represents a a rejection of animal use.

If we mean "vegan," we should say "vegan," and not use "vegetarian," "veg," "veggie," veg*n," etc. There's enough confusion. Let's be clear."

Thanks for reading! Have a wonderful day! :)

Additional comments:
Grace Lorraine,
Thanks for your comment!
It seems this school serves much lesser animal products compared to other schools [note 1]. We can all help to inspire the leadership of that school to go all vegan in their menu.:
I think that if we share this
story though, that we should be clear to tell our friends that their is no distinction between meat and other animal products in how it uses and exploits animals, and that veganism is the moral baseline.

As we sow shall we reap. Our culture's lack of love due to our harm inflicted on animals

Please.. Consider this:
Cats, dogs, cows, insects, humans. Our society wants to make a difference and then justify our use, abuse and killing for taste, pleasure or convenience, based on this difference.
However, we are all one, we are all consciousness, we all love, we all feel, we are. If we sow suffering, we reap suffering. We all have a purpose, to serve, to be a light, not to hurt or use (all animal products and the treatment of animals as commodities are hurting animals). I highly recommend World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle, www.worldpeacediet.org

We need to extend our love and compassion to everyone. Everyone wants to live. If we hurt another being, we hurt ourselves. In order to kill someone, we have to violate this individual's love and wants, we have to crush hopes, destroy a family and friend relationships; We have to sacrifice part of our inner love and compassion; we have to say to ourselves that 'I don't care' in order to take someone's purpose and life. And this has destroyed us, destroyed our society. The reason why people inflict violence and suffering upon others is the lack of empathy and love to others. If we instead would reinforce love and empathy at each meal by living a vegan lifestyle, instead of destroying parts of our love and empathy at each meal by hurting and killing someone for 'convenience' or taste, we would surely attain world peace. As long as we sow violence and wars by our eating choices, our society and culture will be absorbed in violence and wars.

We should stop hurting our family. We should treat everyone with love, compassion and nonviolence, i.e. go vegan . More information at www.vegankit.com

We are all consciousness. How can we talk all day about love to our human sisters and brothers, but talk about our fellow pigs as some resource that can be killed for something trivial as a taste experience.

If you ever got into a loving relationship with pigs , cows and other farmed animals, you would understand how wrong it is. We wouldn't kill a companion dog, so why do we kill a pig, who is consciousness just like us, and who is our companion on this body. They are also consciousness, just another body than what us humans have.

Love and peace

God does not want us to kill animals
