Reply to 'Everything eats something. Something dies so that i may live'

Quote: Everything eats something. Something dies so that i may live

Yes, but we don’t eat humans, because we think it is unethical. Other animals are also consciousness, and the only reason our culture is comfortable with eating them is a big disconnect to them and the exclusion created by our routine non-vegan choices made since childhood. There is no essential difference between other animals and us – we are all consciousness. Just the fact that they have different bodies doesn’t in any way justify us talking their precious life, which they value as much as we value our lives.

And there is a big inherent difference with killing a being that is consciousness, compared to taking the seeds and fruits from a plants – which helps the plant to spread itself. Read more here: http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/04/vegan-answer-i-eat-animals-because-i.html

I would like you all to consider this:

We all agree that “unnecessary” animal suffering and death are morally wrong. If that means anything at all, it must mean that we cannot justify animal suffering and death by reasons of pleasure or convenience. But what is our best justification for imposing suffering and death on the 56 billion animals (excluding fish) we eat annually?

Pleasure. Convenience.

So the only justification we have is that which we agree cannot suffice. This is moral schizophrenia.

If you are not a vegan, you are participating directly in animal exploitation. Being a vegan is easy, better for your health, and the most powerful way that you, as an individual, can say “no” to animal exploitation.

Here are many interviews that brings clarity to the issue of animals right to live and not to be killed for trivial and unnecessary reasons, such as convenience, cultural habit or taste: http://gooseberryproductions.com/

Vegan answer 'I eat animals because I don't want to kill plants'

First of all, I recommend you to study this answer about plants. Here is a quote:
"
Of course, no one who asks this question really thinks that we cannot distinguish between, say, a chicken and a head of lettuce. That is, if, at your next dinner party, you chop a head of lettuce in front of your guests, you will get a different reaction than if you were to carve a live chicken. If, while walking in your garden, I step on a flower intentionally, you may quite correctly be annoyed with me, but if I intentionally kicked your dog, you would be upset with me in a different way. No one really thinks of these as equivalent acts. Everyone recognizes that there is an important difference between the plant and the dog that make kicking the dog a morally more serious act than stepping on a flower.
The difference between the animal and the plant involves sentience. That is, nonhumans—or at least the ones we routinely exploit—are clearly conscious of sense perceptions. Sentient beings have minds; they have preferences, desires, or wants. This is not to say that animal minds are like human minds. For example, the minds of humans, who use symbolic language to navigate their world, may be very different from the minds of bats, who use echolocation to navigate theirs. It is difficult to know. But it is irrelevant; the human and the bat are both sentient. They are both the sorts of beings who have interests; they both have preferences, desires, or wants. The human and the bat may think differently about those interests, but there can be no serious doubt that both have interests, including an interest in avoiding pain and suffering and an interest in continued existence."
Read more here: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/a-frequently-asked-question-what-about-plants/

Second of all, if you think that plants are sentient beings, think about the following:
First off you don't kill plants. (..) If you eat an apple does the apple tree die?
You throw the apple seeds into the ground another apple tree may sprout. Where is the killing?
Do you know that if you planted a carrot top into the soil it will start growing again. Although you won't get a full grown carrot but it does grow.
The only plants you actually "kill" are then ones you need to uproot the roots for.
Take a look at a grain or legume field a soy, rice or wheat field. They are brown when its ready to harvest.
Thats because the plant is dead. I was a part of a seed conservation project.
You cannot conserve seeds from a live plant. Lets take soy. If you plucked the edmame the green raw soy it will rot in some time. Very rarely does it become hard. You have to wait for the plant to die. During this process the seed/legume produces enough phytic acid to protect it and becomes dry natural. Such seeds/legumes stay for years without getting spoiled.

Then plants and humans/animal have a symbiotic relationship. Plants can't move. They need external help. that is why they produce nectar so they can attract the bees and butterflies that help them cross pollinate the flowers so they can reproduce.

Seeds that fall to the ground from overripe fruits or other plants do not grow into a tree. Because the "parent" plant shade and roots does not allow it to grow.
A human or an animal has to eat that fruit and disperse it far enough so it can grow.
This is how all natural fruit groves have come into existence.

A study found that 80% of all trees were planted by squirrels. They store nuts for winter and then they forget where they have stored it, when monsoon comes these nuts grow into trees.

So get it out of your head that you are killing any plants, that is just a myth .

If you are concerned about carrots then you can follow Jain Philosophy Manish Jain Can help you more with this.
Donald Watson was inspired by Jain philosophy of Ahimsa and Veganism is based on it.
They don't eat carrots, potatoes, and other roots vegetables Manish can help you with what to avoid and what are the alternatives.

-------------More Resources:
Plants cannot feel pain; one would need nerve receptors to do that. . It was determined that the "feelings" in plants studied in The Plant Perception were only responding to vibrations. Even scientists dismiss the theory in The Plant Perception because the plants do not have a nervous system. Here's your research

Thankfully we don't need to make excuses for the unnecessary reasons to why we kill animals without moral justification, simply to please our palates. We all have open minds, common sense, and a desire to do the right thing to help us.

Vegan answer to 'Humans are at top of the food chain'

Quote: "but i did not fight my wy to the top of the food chain to be a vegan i think its fine if you are"

Humans having the body of an herbivore [see footnote 1], animal products being bad for us [2], and us having not nutritional need at all for animal products [3], claiming that we are at the “top of the Food chain” is an erroneous statement. Just like the gorillas, cows and horses and many other animals we are herbivores. Just like cows, we can eat meat, however it is not good for our body, and not good for us spiritually [4].

We can’t look at other species, and justify our behavior, just because there are predators that hurt and kill other beings. There are many behaviors that some predators do that we would never justify, and if we use this methodology almost any human behavior can be justified. Put a small bunny in the same room as a small child. She will not try to hurt and kill the bunny. Hurting and killing other sentient beings is something that is contradictory to our inner nature, our loving, compassionate and nonviolent nature; and is something that is only learnt by the indoctrination of our culture, which has reduced animals to being commodities. Doing this as a regular habit, we disconnect ourselves to the animals, and we lose some of our capacity to understand that it is wrong to take the life of another being - who is consciousness just like us. Just because they have been given another body than us, doesn't mean that there is any essential difference. This is also discussed in the wonderful book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle [4]. If you visited a slaughterhouse you would see that the animals don’t want to die and that they suffer tremendously when someone is taking their precious life.

Cows love life and their family, they have emotions, they want to live

If ones choices hurts animals, one become more and more disconnected to who they really are and their purpose of life. One truly loses ones ability to understand and communicate with animals.
If one truly loves a being, one doesn't take their precious life from them.

Cows love their life, they love their family, and show alot of affection to their family. Just like us they have a heart and care for their loved ones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vcQ6yBEE5N0

Rekommenderar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvZpF1R6GUo

Veganic garden, food forests, sustainable farming

Bob,
I have already commented on Alan Savory's work:
I suggest that we let the wild animals thrive and live free again without us killing them and destroying their environment, and let them graze the lands again. A vegan world where we stop killing all wild animals, let the forests grow back again, let the wild animals graze the lands, and let the humans only eat plants.

If we care about what is "good for the animals", we can't take their precious life. Their purpose is not to become our "food". He is trying to "mimic nature". No, lets restore nature again. Let all animals be free again, instead of being our slaves.
I highly recommend this article: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/ , the book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle (http://www.worldpeacediet.org/)
Longer comment here: http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/04/why-allan-savory-environmental-approach.html

There are many thriving veganic gardens, food forests, etc. I believe in small scale planting without monocroping and without any big fossile fuel driven machines killing many animals in the process.

Studies have shown that fish who are hooked and thrown back are so traumatized that many die from the experience. The pain of being hooked in the mouth is excruciating—Thomas Hopkins, professor of marine science at the University of Alabama, has compared it to “dentistry without Novocain, drilling into exposed nerves"."
"Sylvia Earle, former chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, has written, “[Fish] are our fellow citizens with scales and fins. . . . I would never eat anyone I know personally. I wouldn’t deliberately eat a grouper any more than I’d eat a cocker spaniel. They’re so good-natured, so curious. You know, fish are sensitive, they have personalities, they hurt when they’re wounded.”

Vegansk, hel-vegetarisk diet botar psoriasis

Hej Susanne,

Vegans are at no risk of getting a protein deficiency

Please study this:
http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ and this:
http://drmcdougall.com/misc/2007nl/apr/dairy.htm
No risk of getting a protein deficiency.
" Proteins are made from chains of 20 different amino acids that connect together in varying sequences—similar to how all the words in a dictionary are made from the same 26 letters.   Plants (and microorganisms) can synthesize all of the individual amino acids that are used to build proteins, but animals cannot.  There are 8 amino acids that people cannot make and thus, these must be obtained from our diets—they are referred to as “essential.”

After we eat our foods, stomach acids and intestinal enzymes digest the proteins into individual amino acids. These components are then absorbed through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream.  After entering the body’s cells, these amino acids are reassembled into proteins. Proteins function as structural materials which build the scaffoldings that maintain cell shapes, enzymes which catalyze biochemical reactions, and hormones which signal messages between cells—to name only a few of their vital roles.

Since plants are made up of structurally sound cells with enzymes and hormones, they are by nature rich sources of proteins.  In fact, so rich are plants that they can meet the protein needs of the earth’s largest animals: elephants, hippopotamuses, giraffes, and cows.  You would be correct to deduce that the protein needs of relatively small humans can easily be met by plants."

They have a right to live.

Why Allan Savory environmental approach with "holistic" grazing isn't sustainable and isn't good for the animals

I saw the lecture.

I highly recommend this article: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/ , the book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle (http://www.worldpeacediet.org/)
and this about environment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fws0f9s4Bas
And this article about Dr. Richard Oppenlander commenting on Allan Savorys approach: http://freefromharm.org/agriculture-environment/saving-the-world-with-livestock-the-allan-savory-approach-examined/
James McWilliams write:
It has been a long-running quest of mine to debunk the myth of “rotational” or “holistic” grazing. Allan Savory’s recent TED talk drew fresh attention to the issue in a way that seemed to evoke rabid salivation in those who think they can eat animals as a way to ameliorate climate change. Savory’s talk went viral, foodie environmentalists everywhere started sharpening their steak knives, and I leaped headlong into the fray with this piece, published today in Slate, a venue that—to its everlasting credit—is fearless about taking on the status quo. If you are so inclined, express your opinion about the article there. It helps.

The underlying premise that renders moot all efforts to graze animals holistically is the fact that humans cannot, no matter how eloquent they are, create ecosystems that replicate the shifting relational matrix that we call nature. It almost seems absurd that this limitation would even have to be pointed in the first place, but every time I look up there seems to be another old white man claiming that he has the key to capturing and mimicking the infinite complexity of global ecosystems. These people call themselves environmentalists, but their approach to the ecosystem is as arrogant and aggressive as that of any corn-growing, GMO-using monoculturalist. The best thing we can do to any ecosystem (he said on Earth Day 2013) is leave it well enough alone. Back off, human.

Removing domesticated animals from the planet is the best way we can do this. Livestock emit more GHG emissions than cars. They use more water than any other aspect of agriculture. They trample potentially healthy land into hardpan. They take up one third of the globe’s arable land. They are a menace to the environment and no amount of theorizing about how herds and predators once kept carbon-sequestering grasslands safe and healthy will rectify the reality that the reason those grasslands are no longer safe and healthy is because humans domesticated animals to eat them.

The complexity of the earth is beyond us. What we need on Earth Day is a recognition of this reality. Some call it humility.
[Note, I don't agree with his approach about animal rights, that is outlined on his website. I follow the approach outlined here: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/ ]

Jesus, don't kill, animals are included in the golden rule, sermon of Mount

Jesus was a vegan (i.e. he didn't use, hurt, kill, exploit and steal from animals): http://circleofcompassion.org/articles/articles-will/article-lostreligionjesus.htm
So when he said we should treat others as we ourselves want to be treated ourselves, and to love our neighbour as ourselves, he referred to all animals. So this principle applies to all beings regardless of species:

If we don't want to be killed, we shouldn't kill another being.
If we don't want someone else to steal our family, we shouldn't steal their family.
If we want to find our purpose in this world, we shouldn't steal others purpose.
If we don't want to be exploited and abused, we shouldn't abuse anyone else.
If we don't want to become enslaved, we shouldn't keep anyone else as a slave.
If we don't want to hurt any animals, we must become vegans (i.e. stop eating, wearing and using animal products, and in other ways do actions that are hurting and killing animals).
If we don't want our family to be destroyed, we shouldn't destroy other individual's family (which happens whenever we eat milk, eggs or other animal products).
All animals are conscious and they do value life as much as we do. I highly recommend this lecture: http://vimeo.com/17538152#at=0 and the book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle (www.worldpeacediet.org )

--------
We need never look for universal peace on this earth until men stop killing animals for food. The lust for blood has permeated the race thought and the destruction of life will continue to repeat its psychology, the world round, until men willingly observe the law in all phases of life, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’”

Israel, vegan revolution, Gary Yourofsky and why violence is wrong

Thanks for sharing!
I am very happy that the vegan moment is growing in Israel!
I am sad though that many don't oppose all violence, and that Gary Yourofsky justify violence. It is wrong, and it also is brought up in many articles about the vegan movement in Israel, which I think distances some people from veganism.
Israel really, really needs a strong movement of nonviolence (like all the world).
[These are some good articles about the importance of nonviolence: www.abolitionistapproach.com/on-violence/ ]

What happens in Israel also shows what really is effective, and what is waking people's consciousness, is a clear vegan message reaching the masses.

The purpose of a cow/pig/horse is not to become your McDonalds-meal

Have you ever thought of why we love dogs and eat cows? And how the life of the cows and pigs (and possibly horses) that end up in your McDonalds-meal was, and if their purpose truly was to be killed for a "taste experience"? Animal products is unhealthy for us and we have no nutritional need for them: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/
I became a vegan - i.e. I stopped participating in all animal exploitation (including causing animals suffering by my food choices) - this autumn. It is the best decision that I have made. To show love, compassion and nonviolence to individuals of all beings truly transforms ones life. If we want to have true peace, we shouldn't inflict suffering to others. As we sow, so will we reap.

It think this is why everyone should become a vegan:
We should treat others as we want to be treated ourselves
All animals are conscious and they do value life as much as we do.
The following applies to all animals: humans, dogs, cats, cows, etc.:
If we don't want to be killed, we shouldn't kill other being.

If we love animals, we don't kill animals. We don't kill and eat anyone that we love. If we love animals, we must support their want to not be oppressed, including not to be killed.
I highly recommend this lecture: http://vimeo.com/17538152 and the book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle (www.worldpeacediet.org )

All kind of animal products, including eggs and milk, are causing humans and other animals terrible suffering, oppression, starvation and death. Being vegan is the only way not to participate in the oppression.
And for persons following Christianity:
Jesus also was a vegan: http://circleofcompassion.org/articles/articles-will/article-lostreligionjesus.htm

We should respect that animals want to live, and not cause them any harm

Thomas,
Peace and love to you and everyone else!

I am not forcing anything. I am sharing what took me 28 years to understand – that it is wrong to take the life of another conscious being for a “taste experience”. My purpose is only to help everyone – to spread a message of love, compassion and nonviolence towards everyone! The reason why people eat animal products is because of our cultural indoctrination since childhood that teaches that animals are “resources”. When we take the life of another being who wants to live, we must either consciously or subconsciously sacrifice a part of our love and empathy. Because if we use our love and empathy, we would listen to the animal, show mercy and compassion, and spare his/her life. This is very destructive to sacrifice our love and empathy.

Respect is important. We must respect the lives of all conscious beings. They all have a moral value and an interest of living.

We know that animals don’t want to die (see the videos e.g. at www.vegankit.com), we know that they love their family and that they love their friends. We know that we are causing harm and misery by taking their lives. We know that the consumption of animal products are destructive for our health: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ ; and causes poverty, starvation, massive deforestation, eviction of our human brothers and sisters from their dwellings, enormous injustices: http://www.drmcdougall.com/video/expert_testimonies_oppenlander.htm

Animal products are causing cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, and other diseases, so advocating cutting them out will help millions of our human brothers and sisters. Millions of people are dying because of this destructive diet: http://www.thechinastudy.com/ , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DId_xJxbemQ , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqKNfyUPzoU , http://www.forksoverknives.com/

Mutual benefit is wonderful. The animals don’t benefit of being confined, harmed, domesticated and killed. The domestication of animals started about 10000 years ago. Since then our culture has lost its respect for the animals and their lives.

This is a wonderful article discussing this: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/

We also know that it is morally wrong to cause animals unnecessary suffering and that all use of animals is causing them unnecessary suffering: http://gooseberryproductions.com/

I can’t see how a benevolent, compassionate and loving Creator would advocate a diet and use of animals which is causing such tremendous misery both for humans and non-human animals.
Regarding plants, I recommend this article: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/a-frequently-asked-question-what-about-plants/#.UXxE-srSlI0

Deforestation of tropical rainforests, more than 2/3 of Ethiopia’s topsoil has been lost due to raising cattle

1. Which areas are you referring to?

And what has caused these areas to become "NOT suitable for farming food crops of any kind."
Many areas have had this tragic fate:
"Our demand to eat animals is responsible for 30-51% of all anthropogenic ghg emissions and climate change, 80% of the deforestation of tropical rainforests, 100% of the overgrazing, 100% of the fisheries collapse, 100% of the food insecurity issues (with factors we can control), and at least 50% of the rapid extinction of terrestrial and oceanic species. This is what needs to be said."
http://comfortablyunaware.com/index.php/blog/what-was-missed-at-durban/
And then we have the issue of the topsoil being destroyed due to raising cattle, which is very important for a diverse and rich plant life:
More than 2/3 of Ethiopia’s topsoil has been lost due to raising cattle. Many countries elsewhere in Africa and in the Amazonian region that suffer from hunger raise cattle inefficiently at the expense of their soil, localized climate, and other resources while producing a fraction of the food they could if converting to plant based foods. This is because of their  very powerful cultural factors to raise cattle as well as demand globally and by neighboring countries.

3. Have you even studied the research referred to in http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ ?

Dog fighting, animal cruelty, all non-vegan choices are causing cruelty to animals

It is terrible. Let people know that there is as much cruelty involved in all non-vegan choices, educate them, so that they can break the disconnect and go vegan. This is a good essay: http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/what-michael-vick-taught-us/

Vegan diet, vegan recipes

Hello Heather!

Thanks for cutting of animal products!

Have a wonderful day! : )

Why do we care for and love dogs, cats and some birds, but hurt and kill animals for food?

Hello Emma! That’s wonderful! : ) Well done!

If everyone cared that much for every individual on this planet – regardless of whether it is a bird, dog, cat, cow, insect or pig, we would have peace on our planet, no more starvation and no more suffering. What is sad is that our culture has taught us to show love and empathy to e.g. dogs, cats and some birds; but that it is right to eat milk, eggs and meat – which all are directly causing the suffering and death to trillions of animals each year (including more than 60 billion land animals). If we regard animals to have a moral value and rights, we shouldn’t use them and take their lives, their purpose, their families and friends.

I recommend this lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvZpF1R6GUo

Campaign against fur - insults and violence is morally wrong

We don’t have the right to make any moral judgment about people’s character- just because someone is heavily indoctrinated by our culture, doesn’t mean that he/she is trying to be evil or mean or to hurt someone else.

And 99% of the world's population is hurting and killing animals daily by their non-vegan choices - including the people wearing fur. There is no distinction.

But the solution is not to insult anyone or to make moral judgments about a person’s character. The solution is a message of love, compassion and nonviolence to everyone, and to educate people out of their ignorance, which is caused by our cultural indoctrination and people's daily exclusion of animals in our meals and other choices, which they have been exposed to since their childhood.
Love and compassion atttracts people and makes people more loving and compassionate. Judging words does the opposite.

Non-vegans usually do not intend to be evil to animals, they are just heavily disconnected to the animals. By their actions they become desensitized and lose their intelligence and connection with animals. It is possible to demonstrate love and compassion towards non-vegans and at the same time not compromising veganism = love, compassion and non-violence toward all living beings. E.g. this former non-vegan who slaughtered many animals was very disconnected: http://www.farmkind.org/
I write more about it here: http://bloganders.blogspot.no/2013/04/veganism-love-compassion-and-non.html

I challenge you all to read the fantastic book World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle, available here: www.worldpeacediet.org

Eating of animal products causes cancer, heart attacks and coronory disease

We know that consumption of animal products cause cancer and that a plant based diet is treating it:

" Women fear breast cancer above all other health problems. Fortunately, this is a preventable disease with the right diet and a healthy lifestyle. C
ontrary to what most people hope for, early detection by mammography causes more harm than good. Radical surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are brutal remedies universally prescribed to women with breast cancer, yet they provide little, if any, survival benefit. Hormone manipulation is of some value. However, the best, and most overlooked, approach for treating breast cancer is the McDougall Program – a plant-food based, low-fat diet with added exercise."
http://www.drmcdougall.com/med_hot_breastcancer.html

A very informative movie: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/

The correlation between eating animal products and cancer is backed up in the links I provided, in this: http://www.thechinastudy.com/ ; and more research.
No, everyone doesn't get cancer that eat animal products.

There is also a strong correlation between heart attacks and coronory disease and the consumption of animal products: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqKNfyUPzoU
And one can get completely out of the risk-zone by eating a healthy vegan diet without processed foods and Oils.

Cause of the injustices in Bangladesh, e.g. in garment factories, and the solution to end poverty and starvation

The cause of injustices, poverty, suffering of animals and people and starvation in our world and how animal agriculture isn't sustainable:

Matt Vercoe wrote about a catastrophy in a garment factory in Bangladesh:
http://www.npr.org/2013/04/27/179251838/double-take-toons-deadly-work-places?utm_source=NPR&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=20130427
Thanks for sharing!
It inspired me to write this, together with what I have read in the World Peace Diet, the writing of Dr. Richard Oppenlander and other sources of inspiration:

Matt wrote: ":( The price they pay so we can have cheap clothes...... why is their life worth less than a few corporate dollars? We perpetuate this by insisting on buying the cheapest possible commodities so we may have new clothes, a new tv, a new phone, a new car.... "

Furthermore we are exploiting the workers and the animals by chemicals that are destructive for the environment. These are used in the process of manufacturing garments.

This is routine in our society. This is a disease in our society. We are making choices without either knowing about the exploitation involved or ignoring the exploitation involved. We are making the choices without reflecting on the individuals hurt in the manufacture process.

Cheap clothes are bought without thinking of the misery it causes the workers in poor countries with miserable working conditions in the factories, and the humans and other animals suffering by the environmental destruction.

Meat, milk, eggs and other animal products are consumed without thinking of the animals hurt, used, exploited and killed in the process; and the poverty and starvation that it causes in the world [2]

And why do people in Bangladesh and other countries have to work in the first place in a factory with miserable working conditions, instead of growing the fruits, vegetables and legumes and being completely self-sustained?

Bangladesh has a land area of 147,570 (km )² = 147 570 * 10^6 m^2 . This is 36 892 500 acres. Their population is 158,570,535

“Only 400-480 pounds of meat can be produced by one acre of land [Of an animal that has the right to live, and shouldn’t be killed for someone’s taste], compared to 20,000 pounds of plant foods that could be grown on the same slot.” [1]
Thus, one acre of land can feed about 10 adult humans per year.

70% of the 36 892 500 acres is arable, i.e it can feed about 36 892 500 acres * 0,7 * 10 adult humans = about 252 million adults.

Thus, if the land was used in a sustainable, effective and just way in Bangladesh, and the land was divided evenly, everyone could grow their own organic, vegan food (by growing using vegan permaculture) in good working and living conditions. No one would have to work in a factory destroying the workers and destroying the environment, and thus destroying for humans and other animals.

But we are culturally indoctrinated by our culture, daily learning to disconnect and exclude animals from our circle of compassion; and this also spreads to excluding or not caring enough/losing our capacity to be able to understand or think of what our choices are causing other individuals, like the individuals in poor countries. Now instead the population of “livestock” increases; and thus the food that poor people need for their survival are in a greater extend going to animals with the tragic misfortune to be bred and raised to become someone’s dinner.  [2b]

The solution is to start caring, and stop making choices that result in the exploitation of others. To always making vegan choices that are not hurting, exploiting, excluding or inflicting violence on any other being.

Here are some resources that will help you with this: Some informative websites [4,5,6].

  • Wendy Wendy I buy mostly from Goodwill, but sometimes I can't find what I need there. I understand what you're saying. I just think sometimes people forget that there are poor folks in the US, too. Unemployed (hello!), earning little above minimum wage, etc. And when you go into a store that sells fair trade clothes, or at least this is true for me, I can't afford them. I know the whole system is screwed. But not all of us who, from time to time, buy cheap clothes do it because we're unaware, you know? I'm not saying that I don't recognize still that I'm privileged. The fact that I live in the US and have access to things like computers and grad school and stuff I am very very grateful for. But maybe it's not always quite so black and white.
  • Anders Branderud Wendy Wendy,
    Thanks for your comment!
I am aware of this. We can only do our best!
It is great to buy at Goodwill instead of new things when possible as you are doing. Also Ebay may be an option, they sell alot of used clothes.
    I didn't mean to paint a
black-and-white picture that is claiming that everyone who is buying cheap new clothes is not aware of what their choices are causing/or that everyone have can afford fair trade-clothing.
I just wanted to paint a general picture of the mentality that our culture has created. Of course there are many people, like you, who are fighting against this mentality.

    Have a wonderful day!!
