It is not natural to kill animals. Killing and hurting animals contradicts the basic intuition that humans are born with.

You can't prove that it is justifiable to kill animals, or that it is "natural" for us to kill animals.

Killing and hurting animals contradicts the basic intuition that humans are born with.

We have the ability to develop love and compassion for all beings. But it requires that we stop oppressing them. We can intuitively know that it is wrong to cause suffering and to kill another sentient being. However, if we oppress animals routinely as most humans do, we may lose this capacity. Just like persons committing severe moral atrocities may not have comprehended that what they did was morally wrong. I believe that men are goodhearted. However, humans participating in regularly excluding the animals, regularly saying 'I don't care' by the choices made, regularly oppressing them by eating them, wearing them and making other choices that are oppressing the animals, may become very disconnected to the animals, their lives and their inherent moral value.

One can reason like this:
"1. The imposition of suffering on any sentient being requires an adequate moral justification and pleasure, amusement, or convenience cannot suffice as adequate to justify imposing suffering on any sentient being
2. The most “humane” animal agriculture involves considerable suffering imposed on sentient beings
3. As a general matter, our best (and only) justification for eating animal products is pleasure, amusement, or convenience
4. Therefore: We cannot morally justify eating animal products

Kravmärkt, förhållandena innebär fortfarande slaveri för djur

The standards provided by "KRAV" still allows confined animals, including all of the abuses of the milk industry, like stealing calves away from their mother, taking the calves milk and much more.
It only gives people a false excuse to kill animals with a better "conscious".
However, there is no such thing as "humane" meat or milk, or any other animal-products.

A cow, or a horse, or a dog, or a cat -- is there any difference? They are all sentient beings, they all have feelings, they all want to live and they all love their family!!!!!
We all agree that it is morally wrong to cause unnecessary suffering and death to animals -- and condemn people who for example enjoy and promote killing innocent dogs just because they got tired of them. However, we must also acknowledge that all animal products-eating is unnecessary and is done merely for "taste" and "enjoyment". So if we want to be moral we must also act upon what we acknowledge -that causing unnecessary suffering and death to animals is unnecessary. We always need to take the victims point of view!!!

All animals have the right to live in freedom (an excellent article by Will Tuttle): http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/

Cow milk belongs to calves, not to humans. Please don't take that which another sentient being needs

My reply to a blog comment:
Eliyahu,
Persons witnessing the murder of animals are aware of this:
"Animals do not 'give' their life to us, as the sugar-coated lie would have it . . . They struggle and fight to the last breath, just as we would do if we were in their place." [John Robbins]

“He must have never seen a predator violently and painfully kill another animal.”
They do it for survival.
Humans do it for “taste”.
Humans are not predators and would NEVER have thought of that idea have they not been ingrained in the culture we live in, and substituted their intuition that it is wrong to harm and kill another sentient being with our cultural belief.
As I pointed out in my previous post there is no such thing as “kindly” take anyone else’s milk – in your example the milk that belongs to a calf.

The domestication of animals started 10000 – 15000 years ago, was propagated by Torah and later on Christianity – and now you see terrible animal abuse and slavery by humans of more than 57 billion land animals per year and more than 1000 billion marine animals each year.

Why would you ever want to eat a product that causes disease, see the research behind: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/
Why would you ever want to eat a products that causes animal such cruelty: http://www.earthlings.com/
Why would you ever want to eat a product which cause cows and their babies to be separated:

Or eggs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wu5RrqMTUtM

Christianity – and now you see terrible animal abuse and slavery by humans of more than 57 billion land animals per year and more than 1000 billion marine animals each year.
All of this is a result by claiming that animals are “property”.

“Almost all animals will eat dairy products but none of them hav the capability to make cheese or milk another animal.”

A capability doesn’t make it moral.

“What the author doesn't focus on is our ability to inflict almost no pain at all pain when shecting an animal. “

You can kill human animals also without almost any pain. It doesn’t make it ethical. Cows are enslaved all their life. We can live symbiotic with animals wild in the nature. We can’t live symbiotic with animals if we force upon them a confined lifestyle on our conditions.

“Perhaps the author sees nothing symbiotic in domesticating milk animals in exchange for their protection.”
I don’t see any symbiotic in draining a cow on her calcium and to take the milk that the calf needs.
Cows love their children as much as you love yours: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vcQ6yBEE5N0
It is not ethical to deprive the cows on the most precious that they have – their relationship with their family and their life.

2. The most “humane” animal agriculture involves considerable suffering imposed on sentient beings
3. As a general matter, our best (and only) justification for eating animal products is pleasure, amusement, or convenience

1. http://www.animalstudies.msu.edu/Slaughterhouses_and_Increased_Crime_Rates.pdf

Hatered is never the solution. Love and compassion is - and that to all sentient beings.

I don't know why they single out people like that.
It only creates hate.
Everyone that isn't a vegan is a part of the animal exploitation.
However most people are good-hearted. The reason that they partake of animal exploitation is that they from childhood has been taught and disconnected to the animals.
If we want to encourage artists to become vegan, we shouldn't name them like this, but send them messages of love and compassion showing them that it is unethical to partake of oppression.
I recommend this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLgGnP0pWzM

Humans are herbivores, And if you took a baby and put a bunny in front of him, and if you had a cat and a bunny, the cat at any age would want to attack and kill the bunny and the child would say, 'Oh, look at the bunny'

We are natural plant-eaters.
http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/natural.html

"And if you took a baby and put a bunny in front of him, and if you had a cat and a bunny, the cat at any age would want to attack and kill the bunny and the child would say, “Oh, look at the bunny!” So the idea that we have some innate aggression towards animals…we don’t.

If you open the mouth of a cat, a carnivore, you see that they have long canines, way beyond the other teeth. If you open the mouth of a dog, you see the same. If you open your mouth, you don’t. You have canines that are the same length as your incisors. If you have long canine teeth, it allows you to do two things: one, it allows you to snatch your prey. The other thing it allows you to do is to pull away the hide. If a dog happens to catch a rabbit or another animal, it can very easily remove the hide. If a cat catches a squirrel, they have no trouble with that. But if a person does that, they will work all day and all night to get the skin off of an animal, because they don’t have long canine teeth anymore.

We also don’t have claws. Plus we’re not fast. Plus we don’t have very good vision, or good sense of smell. An owl is a predator and can detect a mouse at a tremendous distance. Dogs have a sense of smell much greater than ours and they’re much faster than we are. We have fairly dull senses, fairly slow locomotion. In our Olympic trials, we celebrate speeds that would be an embarrassment to a bird or a dog or another animal.

We have nothing to kill prey with and nothing to remove the hide with. So the question is when did that change come? It’s something like 3.5 million years ago that we lost our long canine teeth. And most of the great apes did, too—and they’re almost entirely vegetarian. Chimpanzees will eat a little bit of meat. But, they never eat dairy products, and no other animal would do that."

There is a solution to poverty and starvation and the solution is a world where no people at animal products

I think that we should focus on what people can do. It is so easy for people to think what others can do, but then they forget their own potential and the difference that they can make; and how their decisions has a big effect on others poverty and starvation.

This is what I think we should make our friends understand:
The plant-based foods that the more than 56 billion land animals (who have the sadly misfortune to grow up to become someones food) brutally slaughtered each year eats could feed more than 9 billion people.
15 million children are dieing of starvation in the world each year. Hundreds of millions don't get enough food. If we care of them we must let our eating habits reflect this. If everyone ate plant-based food, the food would suffice for everyone's need.

This is not the only effect. By eating animal products 3 times a day we teach our children that it is okay to take the life of innocent sentient beings, and that some individuals are of less value than others; instead of increasing our children's love and compassion by loving all sentient beings for their different qualities (just as many parents teach their children to extend their love and compassion for some dogs). I became a vegan this autumn and notice how this also increases my love and compassion for other humans, and not only all other animals.

This articles shows how eating animal products effects the environment and effects poverty and starvation: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jan/22/quinoa-bolivian-farmers-meat-eaters-hunger

Research -see e.g. the research referred to here: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ - has proven that animal products are unhealthy.

A very strong argument to eat a plant-based diet: A cow, or a horse, or a dog, or a cat -- is there any difference? They are all sentient beings, they all have feelings, they all want to live and they all love their family!!!!!
We all agree that it is morally wrong to cause unnecessary suffering and death to animals -- and condemn people who for example enjoy and promote killing innocent dogs just because they got tired of them. However, we must also acknowledge that all animal products-eating is unnecessary and is done merely for "taste" and "enjoyment". So if we want to be moral we must also act upon what we acknowledge -that causing unnecessary suffering and death to animals is unnecessary. And in order to not cause other beings unnecessary suffering we must become vegans: see www.vegankit.com

.......
The animal industry (all kind of farming), has a vast environmental impact and is causing poverty, starvation, a vast amount of greenhouse-gases and subsequent deaths to humans and other animals by droughts and floods because of climate change: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fws0f9s4Bas&feature=em-uploademail

15 million children are dieing of starvation in the world each year. Hundreds of millions don't get enough food. If we care of them we must let our eating habits reflect this. Now, when it comes to "Feeding other humans nutrients," you may be surprised to learn this: "A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change, a UN report said today."

Religious and vegan? Wouldn't a Loving and Compassionate God endorse “unnecessary” animal suffering and death?

A post to anyone who cares about or loves animals and want them to have a good life:
We all agree that “unnecessary” animal suffering and death are morally wrong.
I think you all would agree that a Loving and Compassionate Creator wouldn't endorse “unnecessary” animal suffering and death.

If that means anything at all, it must mean that we cannot justify animal suffering and death by reasons of pleasure or convenience. But what is our best justification for imposing suffering and death on the 56 billion animals (excluding fish) we eat annually?
Pleasure. Convenience.
So the only justification we have is that which we agree cannot suffice. This is moral schizophrenia.

Animals are sentient. Animals do care about their life. Animals don't want to be killed and don't want to be separated from their families. If we care about other animals, more than our "taste" , "pleasure" or "convenience", we must extend our love and compassion in the choices that we make.

Do you know this about milk-products:
In the milk industry cows are raped [usually impregnated by a  machine], having their milk routinely stolen (and cows milk, just as other animal foods are detrimental to human health: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ ), having their calves stolen often the same day they conceive them, having their male calves slaughtered for "meat" ('veal industry'), having the cows being killed usually 5 years old because that they can't produce enough milk.

"When a dairy cow cries to be milked, this is what her whole heart is missing [her calf milking her]. Not a merciless, mechanical milking unit.
It makes me cringe with embarrassment that we would even think of invading this very private and intimate ritual between mother and child. It is such a relief to be vegan."
All animal products are causing animals death, confinement and suffering.

This is a wonderful movie with cows (non gory): http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vcQ6yBEE5N0
Animals have the right to be free and not to be enslaved, confined, inflicted with suffering and pain and killed just because of "tradition", "taste", "enjoyment" or "convenience". I really recommend this article: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/

If you are not a vegan, you are participating directly in animal exploitation. Being a vegan is easy, better for your health, and the most powerful way that you, as an individual, can say “no” to animal exploitation.

Motargument till 'Det er så synd med dere veganere, for dere blir så ekstreme at dere ender opp med mangelsykdommer'

Hej Linda,

Campaigning against "gestation crates" instead of advocating against all animal exploitation sends the wrong message

I think we should devote all our time to advocate veganism. To make campaigns against some abuses of the animal slavery-industry without condemning it all sends the unfortunate and undesired message that some animal exploitation is okay and does not lead to the total abolition of the industry (even though I know most people sharing it are against all animal exploitation).

"Studies cited by animal advocates showed that certain alternatives to the gestation crate actually lower production cost. Industry will adopt such measures anyway; they should not be promoted as “animal rights” measures.

There is no credible evidence that “reform efforts lead to less meat consumption.” We do, however, read every day that people are again eating animal products because they are produced with “compassion” or bear a “humane” label supported by animal organizations. And there is no factual evidence that welfare reform leads to abolition."

http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/books/animals-property-and-the-law/#.UUnzG1dn0W6

This planet contains food for between 12-15 billions people, but because humans are killing and feeding 57 billion enslaved land-fed animals, people are dieing of starvation

Peter,
We all agree that “unnecessary” animal suffering and death are morally wrong.
If you are not a vegan, you are participating directly in animal exploitation. Being a vegan is easy, better for your health, and the most powerful way that you, as an individual, can say “no” to animal exploitation.

The earth contains enough food for 12 - 15 billion people [if we wouldn't feed more than 57 billion land-animals with the misfortune to being someone else's food/boots :'(               ]
We can manage to feed everyone and when people have wakening up and made a conscious choice not to hurt, kill and enslave other beings - just because they happen to be of another species - then we can also educate people to not have more children then this planet can feed.
In this way the food will for all future suffice to all being and to all individuals.

Reply to counter argument: Vegans are slaughtering many insects by the plants they are eating

Joan,
Have you ever thought about that the total amount of plants consumed are much bigger when eating a cow compared to eating vegetables directly? The cow is eating a tremendous amount of food. It is not vegans fault that lots of insects are dieing. It is all the pesticides and methods used when harvesting. I am totally against that insects are killed and devoting most of my times to fight against all animal exploitation. I recommend this: http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/what-are-the-roots-of-freedom-and-slavery/
In our animal exploiting-society it is unfortunately impossible not to cause anyone harm, but we should do our utmost do minimize the animal exploitation, and included in this is to become a vegan.

The minimum requirement in order to accomplish this is to go vegan and inspire other people to become vegans.

This book shows how our violence against other animals also leads to violence against us- the human animal: http://www.worldpeacediet.org/
Research -see e.g. the research referred to here: http://www.adelicatebalance.com.au/ - has proven that animal products are unhealthy.
and all the insects that were slaughtered while gathering crops for their vegan diets ...

  • Dogs have teeth (molars) with relatively flat surfaces designed to grind up bones as well as fibrous plant material.
  • Dogs can digest almost 100% of the carbohydrates they consume.2
  • Dogs have a small intestine that occupies about 23 percent of the total gastrointestinal volume, which is consistent with other omnivores; the small intestine of cats occupies only 15 percent.3,4
  • Dogs can create vitamin A from betacarotene found in plants

"“Thanksgiving dinner's sad and thankless. Christmas dinner's dark and blue. When you stop and try to see it From the turkey's point of view. Sunday dinner isn't sunny. Easter feasts are just bad luck. When you see it from the viewpoint of a chicken or a duck. Oh how I once loved tuna salad Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too Till I stopped and looked at dinner From the dinner's point of view.” Shel Silverstein "Animals do not 'give' their life to us, as the sugar-coated lie would have it . . . They struggle and fight to the last breath, just as we would do if we were in their place." [John Robbins]

Leather isn't merely a "by-product" of the beef industry. In fact, most leather doesn't even come from the same type of cow used for beef.

Hello Eric,

You wrote:"Yes, I agree with that statement in general. I in no way agree with abusing animals .."

Great Eric!
Does the animals we kill for food or clothing want to sacrifice their life for clothing and food that we have no need of whatsoever?
Why do you eat meat at all? Isn't this causing unnecessary suffering to an animal?
Do you eat any other animal products, or use any animal products in other ways? If you research e.g. the website www.vegankit.com you will understand that any kind of animal use is wrong, and that it perpetuates the status of animals as "property", which is the cause of the most horrendous physical animal abuses. If you understand this you can in no way participate in any kind of use of animal, since you are both confining and exploiting an animal and are perpetuating the "property"-status of animals, with all of its negative consequences.

Can we extend our compassion, mercy and love to them and to choices that doesn't cause them unnecessary suffering and pain.
The animals make great resistance when someone tries to kill them. They don't want do die.

Please watch the video 'Animals as property' do understand the results of giving animals the status of being "property":
http://www.abolitionistapproach.com/video/#.USoSj1fA0Wk

If you agree of the statement in general that it is immoral to cause animals unnecessary suffering, how can you justify that people caused animals unnecessary suffering  for clothing that they didn't need to survive?

When it comes to animals and byproducts, I agree with this statement:
"Leather isn't merely a "by-product" of the beef industry. In fact, most leather doesn't even come from the same type of cow used for beef.
Even if this were the case, it's important, again, to think of what we do to animals not in terms of "inflicting suffering," but their property status. If an animal is killed to create two different products, what sense does it make to say one product is a by-product while the other is the real thing? Animals are killed because their dead bodies can be sold in the form of various products."

The notion of religion and society that animals are "property" and can be killed for sake of "taste" goes against our inner intuition

"You still conflate slaughter with suffring without acknowledging the differences in method."
Yes, I am.
A big reason that animals are looked upon as "property" today is because of teachings in books such as the Torah, Bible and the Quran.

"As I discuss in Introduction to Animal Rights, the notion of equal inherent value is not in any way mysterious or metaphysical. It is a logical notion that concerns the minimal requirements for membership in the moral community, and it requires that we accord animals the moral right not to be treated as things. This is another way of saying that it requires that we abolish animal exploitation. But if we do not accept that animals belong in the moral community in the first place, or if we don’t care about acting morally, the notion of animals having equal inherent value is not going to be of much use.

We all reject human slavery because we recognize that it places those who are enslaved outside the moral community entirely; it reduces them to things. Given that we accept as a matter of moral intuition that all humans should be included in the moral community, that they should be regarded as moral persons and not things, then whatever else this requires, it requires that we abolish slavery. Similarly, if we see animals as having moral value, then, whatever else that requires, it requires that we abolish their status as property, as things, and that we treat them as moral persons. And this requires that we stop consuming them. Period.
But if we do not see any animals as having moral value–and that is a matter that cannot be “proved” in some “objective” or “scientific” way–then logical arguments about what animals should be regarded as moral persons and what moral personhood requires will be meaningless."

The Torah is regarding animals as property. People kill animals -regardless of method - because of that they are regarded as "property".
Furthermore, if we care about animals, we can't ignore their life until the day they were unjustifiably killed.
"So called" "kosher"-animals live confined in very bad living conditions, just like all animals. There is NO difference between how they are treated.

They are suffering and this is applicable 'The imposition of suffering on any sentient being requires an adequate moral justification and pleasure, amusement, or convenience cannot suffice as adequate to justify imposing suffering on any sentient being'
All animals suffer at their death -regardless of slaughter method - and thus all murder by slaughter is immoral based on this premise:  The imposition of suffering on any sentient being requires an adequate moral justification and pleasure, amusement, or convenience cannot suffice as adequate to justify imposing suffering on any sentient being

Furthermore the most horrendous cases you can see of animal abuse is a consequence of animals being regarded as "property", which you preach each time you partake of animal products and endorse that animals are living confined.
That animals have a status as "property" leads to atrocities like this on "kosher"-facitilities: http://failedmessiah.typepad.com/failed_messiahcom/2012/12/animal-cruelty-at-israels-premier-glatt-kosher-slaughterhouse-causes-international-outcry-567.html
