These are some shorts thoughts that I have about the movie Spiderman 2 that I watched yesterday evening. I saw Spiderman 1 in 2002 with some friends at a cinema in Täby, a suburb outside of Stockholm, Sweden. Many things in my life, values and goals have changed since then. I write more about this in this article: Testimonial, finding the truth of the Hebrew Bible made me leave Christianity and to start keeping Torah [which also contains a link for a logical proof of Torah (books of Moses) being the Instruction Manual of the Creator to mankind].
It was my friends here in Rechovot in Israel whom watched the movie. I sat and did my studies and from the beginning I didn’t intend to see that much of the movie, but some wise words from the characters of the movie now and then and the interaction between Peter and Mary Jane Watson made me continue watching. I also saw the opportunity to be able to write some words about the movie.
I will describe the interaction. Be aware that this description reveals a big part of the storyline of the movie, including the end of the movie! If you want to watch the movie before this synopsis, you can at least read the two last paragraphs, which don't reveal anything related to the storyline.
I didn’t watch the movie from the beginning, so this starts in the middle of the movie. Peter is in love with Mary Jane. However, he doesn’t dare to express his love in words. For the objective observer, however, it is obvious that he is love with her. That’s what he is communicating. Mary Jane also seems at times to see that this is the case, but she is impatient, and when Peter doesn’t express his love to her, she eventually decides to enter into another relationship. She also gets the impression that she isn’t that important, since Peter misses appointments, e.g. when Mary Jane has reserved a seat to him at the theater and he doesn’t show up. However, the appearance of a situation is not always the same as reality, and when Mary Jane thinks that Peter doesn’t care of her enough even to show up at the theater show that she is playing in, he does in fact care and is out doing his responsibility saving lives.
She almost marries this person, but Peter coming to watch her theater show, expressing his love for her and the words that he tells her causes Mary Jane to change her mind. Peter, though, is unaware of this. Later on she describes her other relationship as this (paraphrasing): ‘Sometimes our mind plays tricks with us.’
It appears that she all the time has been in love with Peter.
The main reason Peter doesn’t want to get into a relationship is because of his fear that this might cause his beloved to get hurt/killed.
Here is one of my favourite quotes from the movie:
“We need a hero, courageous sacrificing people, setting examples for all of us. Everybody loves a hero, people line up for 'em, cheer for them, scream their names, and years later tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who told them to HOLD ON a second longer. I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble. And finally gets us to die with pride. Even though sometimes we have to be steady and give up the thing we want most, even our dreams. “
These words again motivates Peter to take up his role as Spiderman, which he for a while had placed aside, in order to be able to win the heart of Mary Jane. Peter is struggling between choosing to work as Spiderman and to be in a relationship with Mary Jane. He doesn’t understand that he can choose both of these.
A event that occurs some times throughout the storyline is that Peter sometimes loses his ability to use his powers, e.g. to climb walls. One of these times is when he is very sad because of Mary Jane’s love relationship with the other person. I didn’t observe it carefully, but my guess is that him losing his ability to use his powers is related to being filled with sadness.
A main highlight of the movie is in the end when Mary Jane is captured and is saved by Peter in his Spiderman-dress, but without the mask. Her face shines up when she realizes that Peter is Spiderman and - I guess - realizes that what appeared as Peter not caring for her wasn’t true, but that he in fact was out saving lives, and that this was the reason for him not showing up at appointments.
Peter later expresses his love for Mary Jane, but says he can’t let her take the risk of being together with him. Saying this I think is a big mistake, since he should be asking Mary Jane if she is willing to take the risks and let her decide if she is willing to be married with him. At this point in the movie I said - speaking what Mary Jane should be saying: ‘I am willing to take that risk’. She doesn’t say that. However, in a later scene, she cancels the wedding with the person she had a relationship with, and runs to the home of Peter to say (paraphrasing):
This synopsis was to a great extent related to love, and I would like to recommend you to read this article that I have written about love: Torah (Instruction manual of the Creator to mankind), Judaism about love, relationsships and marriage<
It will be helpful for you to know - if you aren’t already aware - what the Creator desires when it comes to relationship; so that your life is formed by these values and not what Hollywood-movies teaches.

I know there'll be risks but I want to face them with you. It's wrong that we should be only half alive... half of ourselves. I love you. So here I am - standing in your doorway. I have always been standing in your doorway. Isn't it about time somebody saved your life?’ They decide to become a couple.
